Abstract:

Surface sediments contamination to heavy metals was evaluated in eight creeks of Mahshahr coastal waters (north-west of the Persian Gulf) from October. 2005 to November 2006. Sediments were collected seasonally by Peterson grab and the concentrations of heavy metals were measured using voltammetry and polarography methods. The range and the mean concentrations obtained in mg/kg were 15.03-35.16 (27.01) for Cu, 65.57-171.41 (102.67) for Ni, 4.63-20.06 (13.22) for Co, 0.093-0.78 (0.22) for Hg, 65.07-379 (113.70) for Zn, 0.27-1.00 (0.56) for Cd and 7.09-29.72 (14.66) for Pb. The background values for different heavy metals were calculated and the contamination factor for each metal and the degree of contamination for each creek we.re determined as well. M. easured concentrations were compared with international standards. According to the contamination factor (Cf), the concentration of some elements such as Hg, Zn, and Ni were at risk level; according to the degree of contamination (Cd), all of the studied creeks could be classifieds moderately polluted except for Ghannam that showed a considerable degree of contamination.

The Investigation of Microplastic Particles in Khor-e-Musa in Persian Gulf Sediments

One of the recently considered pollutants is microplastic particles. To investigate this contaminant, 15 samples of sediment were sampled from Khor-e-Musa estuary. Samples were transferred to the laboratory in thick plastic bags for extraction and counting of microplastic particles. H2O2 was first used to remove organic matter in the samples. Then, using the condensation separation method, the ...

Assessing some heavy metals pollutions in sediments of the northern Persian Gulf (Bushehr province)

Background: Land and water pollution by heavy metals is a universal issue. Although the pollution affects all countries, but its range and severity vary hugely. The pollution of the marine environment by heavy metals is a worldwide problem. Marine sediments can be sensitive indicators for monitoring contaminants in aquatic environments. Methods: The concentration of 10 elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu...

Bioaccumulation of heavy metals (Ni, V, Cu, Pb) in various tissues of Metapenaeus affinis in the Northwest of Persian Gulf

This study was carried out to detect the concentration of heavy metals (Ni, V, Cu, Pb) in the muscle, gills and hepatopancreas tissues of female and male of Metapenaeus affinis in Bahrekan Bay. Sampling was conducted in 15 stations in triplicate, on which the samples collected by Trawl net. After separation of tissues, samples were digested by acid digestion with nitric and percloric acid and h...

Investigation of physicochemical factors, chl-a and primary production in Mahshahr Creeks (Northwest Persian Gulf)

The study on physicochemical factors and primary production of the aquatic ecosystems is important to know the characteristics of the environment and capacity of recharge. Mahshahr Creeks are the most important creeks in the Northwest Persian Gulf, Iran. In this study, variations in physicochemical factors, chl-a, and primary production in creeks of Mahshahr, Zangi, and Moussa were evaluated fo...

Investigation of physicochemical factors, chl-a and primary production in Mahshahr Creeks (Northwest Persian Gulf)

The study on physiochemical factors and primary production of the aquatic ecosystems is important to know the characteristic of environment and capacity of recharge. Mahshahr creeks are the most important creeks in Khuzestan, Iran. In this study, variations in physiochemical factors, chl-a and primary production in 3 regions (Mahshahr, Zangi, and Moussa entrance creeks) were evaluated in 2 mont...
